History of Jiffy ™

Jiffy ™ is written in Golden letters in India as the Pipe Fittings that made safe and efficient transportation of Water possible in true sense. It helped save millions of litres of pumped and treated Water which was otherwise lost every day through leaky joints besides the contamination risks to which it was exposed on its journey from source to consumers.

Post 1966, India started using Tyton® Pipes but continued losing water at an unbelievable rate of 50 to 60% through the Pipe Fittings. The Fittings were invariably joined with Pig Lead which besides contaminating the flowing water itself with its well-known toxicity, started leaking at the very first provocation. Repairing leaky joints mostly remained a distant dream since locating leakages in India had always been a herculean task. The unattended leakages very often turned into sources of dreaded diseases that broke out at regular intervals besides the colossal loss of our natural resources.

These Fittings, instead of using conventional Pig Lead, employed everlasting resilient Rubber Gaskets as the sealing element that could be compressed mechanically to attain perfect sealing and which would last for ages. This guaranteed sealing eliminated leakages through Pipe Fittings and ruled out possible contamination risks. The quick and easy mechanical jointing of Jiffy ™ Fittings allowed each and every fitting to be tested to the desired levels before dispatch, which hitherto was impracticable in the Industry. It added security to the designs and products put in service.

The reliability of Jiffy ™ Fittings encouraged Public Health Engineers to opt for pumping water at higher pressures and for longer hours to meet increasing demands. The first such high pressure Pipe Line in India was laid at Chikaldhara Water Supply Scheme in Amravati District (Maharashtra State) under Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran. Each and every Jiffy ™ Pipe Fitting for this scheme was tested to 50 Kg/cm2 by EIL, Kolkata before dispatch. The laid pipe line was tested to 39 kg/cm2 and the Pipe Line is still operating at 23 kg/cm2 with the same efficiency.

The flawless consistency of Jiffy ™ Fittings in field performances lead BIS to formulate a new Standard IS: 13382 in 1992 for Mechanical Joint Pipe Fittings for CI & DI Pipes to encourage Pipe Fitting Manufacturers in India to venture into Mechanical Joint Fittings without infringing legal obligations related to Jiffy ™ Fittings.

But Jiffy ™ Fittings always remained the preferred choice of Hydraulic Engineers because of its compact design, easy handling and better economics. Water Supply Authorities recommended use of Jiffy ™ Fittings in their Networks and for them it remained as the Standard Fitting. DI Pipes started being manufactured in India in 1995 and since their inception; thousands of Kilometers of DI Pipes have already been laid with CI Jiffy ™ Fittings, which are still operating with very credible records.

Today Jiffy ™ is a very common name in Water Supply Industry of India where all legal rights under Trade Mark and Copyright Acts (prevailing in the country) are exclusively owned by Orient Rubber Products Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata.

The whole range of Cast Iron Jiffy ™ Fittings that are being used for the last 37 years in India are now being made available in Ductile Iron. Orient Rubber Products Pvt. Ltd. holds the exclusive right to manufacture and sell these Jiffy ™ Fittings in Cast Iron and Ductile Iron as per the copyrights issued by the Government of India, New Delhi.
